Four Reasons for Planting Arborvitae in Cincinnati

ArborvitaeOur landscaping clients in Cincinnati often ask what they should think about planting. Several hearty plants come to mind, and one that often tops our list is arborvitae.

This resilient evergreen (also called Thuja) thrives as a tree, a shrub, or a hedge. Arborvitae works great in a pot or in a garden.

Here are four solid reasons to consider:

  1. A great hedge provides security

Having a line of dense hedges can obscure visibility from the street, and provides a border – a green moat of sorts – for the front of your house. If you are on a busy street, or have many pedestrians walking in front, this could prove to be very helpful.

  1. They provide a beautiful screen

You can increase your privacy without putting up additional fencing. A line of arborvitae can let you set up an outdoor garden that feels insulated from neighbors as well as the sidewalk and street. Their lush growth is evergreen, of course, so it stays full throughout the year.

  1. They require no pruning and almost no maintenance

If you are new to the world of gardening, arborvitae can offer you a lot. The growth patterns are easy to manage, and they grow into lovely pyramid-type shapes on their own. You want to water them frequently for their first 10-12 weeks, and then you can taper off.

  1. Arborvitae do great in partial shade or sun

No matter what your light situation is like, your arborvitae can thrive. They love moist soil, but they do not need directly sunlight.
