Cincinnati Tree Bracing and Cabling Experts: Tree Images

Tree bark split open

Living in the Cincinnati area means that you’re probably pretty lucky in terms of having a variety of gorgeous trees thriving in and around your yard. We’re lucky to live in an area of great arboreal diversity where many varieties of trees abound. The potential downside to this is that thriving trees sometimes get bigger than they really should and can literally break under their own weight, becoming a threat to people and property in the area, and sometimes severely damaging themselves in the process. One of the best ways to support older trees with heavy branches that have gotten too big for them to handle without help is tree cabling or tree bracing. These techniques allow us as tree service professionals to give your trees enough support to continue thriving for years into the future.

Here at Tree Images, we have decades of experience correctly applying braces and cables to Cincinnati’s trees. We have the expertise to help support your tree so that it doesn’t damage itself, or someone or something else. Tree Cabling and Bracing FAQs

What Are Tree Bracing and Cabling?

Tree cabling and bracing techniques add additional support to trees that have been damaged or stressed due a to a variety of factors from wind damage to excessively heavy foliage to environmental stressors. Tree bracing and cabling involves adding permanent or semi-permanent metal supports within, between, or around tree branches and trunks in order to provide additional support to trees that might fall, lean or be catastrophically damaged without help. Bracing usually refers to the use of rigid supports, while cabling refers to the use of flexible “cables” to support trees. The main goal is usually to preserve the life and health of the tree and its major limbs, but cabling and bracing can also be used, ahead of any apparent weakness in the tree, to protect people and property from potential future harm.

When Would These Tree Cabling Techniques Need to Be Used?

Tree bracing and cabling are often used when a tree shows signs of weakness, or when large branches get overly long and heavy. Sometimes branches start to crack or creak – sometimes major branches have already been lost and cabling and bracing are used to preserve remaining limbs. These techniques can also be used before signs of trouble, for example if the location of a large overhanging branch would endanger people or property. Sometimes it’s a good idea to go ahead and cable a large branch, just to be safe, because the alternative is too risky. It’s usually best for cabling and bracing to be done alongside intense, professional pruning – if you have concerns about the welfare of your tree to the point that you’re having it braced, it’s probably a good idea to reduce some of the weight and stress on the tree by having it professionally trimmed, as well. And, once your tree has been braced, it will need to be checked on regularly (at least once per year) to make sure that it’s doing well and that the cabling and bracing techniques are still doing their job properly.

Can’t I Just Do It Myself?

This is not an appropriate time for the average homeowner to try to DIY a solution. Tree bracing and cabling techniques require experience and detailed knowledge about tree growth and development. The correct placement of the cables, as well as decisions about dynamic or static bracing, are all choices that should be made by tree service experts with tons of experience, like those of us here at Tree Images. Done incorrectly, bracing and cabling can severely damage the tree and actually make it more likely to fall or lose a large limb in a way that could end up hurting someone or damaging property. Please don’t try to do this yourself.

What Happens If I Just … Don’t Have My Tree Braced?

If your tree needs bracing or cabling, and you decide not to do it, you’re just waiting for disaster to strike. Your tree could lose a limb, crack down the middle, uproot and tip over … all onto people or property in its vicinity. If your tree has been identified as one that needs the support of tree cabling or bracing, you should either have it done, or have the tree removed. Anything else is irresponsible.
