Landscape Tips: How To Prepare Your Garden For The Fall

You have spent time landscaping your yard. Your garden has produced flowers and vegetables all season, and now it needs some special care. This begins with removing all the plants with seeds since these can become troublesome in the spring. The seeds can overpopulate your garden if they are not removed in the fall. What does this mean? It means it’s time your garden ready for the next season!

Fall is the time to apply amendments to the soil in your Cincinnati yard. Part of preparing the garden includes incorporating manure and compost into the soil, which will feed micro-organisms and help to keep the soil drained properly. Next add some bone meal to put nitrogen in the soil, and add some phosphorus by using rock phosphate. You can purchase a completely formulated fertilizer, which is available in granular and pellet form.

Tilling the soil is the next step and this will ensure that the soil amendments are properly incorporated. Tilling will also open up the soil and relieve compaction. Oxygen will be increased and drainage will be improved. If you do not have access to a tiller, then use a shovel and dig as deep as you can turning the earth over. Don’t worry about the clods because they will erode during the winter. This process of erosion will carry the amendments deeper into the soil. Rest assured that the ground will level out by spring.

FALL DOES NOT MEAN THE GROWING SEASON IS FINISHED

Before you till all of your garden you may want to save space to plant vegetables that grow well at this time, or you may want to prepare your garden for the fall after you have grown all that you can. Fall is a great time to plant beets, garlic, kale, radishes and many other greens. There are many more vegetables you can grow in the fall including many herbs that you hang in the garage to dry. These will be very useful in flavoring your dishes during the winter.

Preparing your garden for the fall season really means getting it ready to grow your garden abundantly in the spring. By preparing properly, you can be sure of a wonderful reward when the weather starts turning warm yet again.
