September, October, and November – just thinking of the months of autumn brings to mind cozy sweaters, pumpkin carving, crackling fireplaces, and gorgeous fall colors on the trees. In terms of great foliage displays, not all trees are created equally. Some types have consistently brighter, more vivid, or more unusual leaf colors in the fall.
Do keep in mind that you always want to choose trees that are native to your local area and that work well in the soil and climate conditions where you live. Maple
Maple trees are renowned for stunning fall colors. They come in a wide variety of types that have autumn leaves that range from bright yellow to fiery red to purple. Some varieties of maples are also the source for delicious maple syrup, so that’s an extra bonus for this type of beautiful tree.
Oak
Oak trees are another great choice for a great autumnal display. Oak tree leaves tend to change color later in the season than a lot of other trees with beautiful fall foliage, so adding some oak trees to your yard can be a good way to extend the time that you get to enjoy those lovely leaves.
Aspen
Aspen trees are mostly known for the way their gorgeous, vivid yellow fall leaves contrast with their white bark. Aspen trees are most common in the western United States, and can also display fall colors in shades of orange and red.
Birch
Birch trees, like Aspens, have white bark that accentuates the vivid shades of their fall leaf colors. Different varieties of birch trees show fall colors that are yellow, red, or orange, but they are best known for the types that produce golden yellow leaves in the autumn.
Dogwood
When most people think of dogwood trees, the first association is with their beautiful springtime blossoms in shades of white and pink. But dogwoods do double duty with equally lovely foliage colors of deep red in the fall.
Ginkgo
Gingko trees have leaves that change to a vibrant, gorgeous yellow in the autumn. The trees are particularly distinct because unlike most trees, gingko trees lose all of their leaves at more or less the same time, creating a beautiful spectacle of cascading leaves, which then create the effect of a blanket of golden leaves on the ground.
Tulip
Like Dogwoods, Tulip trees are most known for their lovely springtime flowers. But their wide, gorgeous, golden leaves make them equally wonderful in the fall.
Ash
Ash trees display a wide array of autumn colors, and some varieties, such as the White Ash, can even produce various colors within a single tree, which is unusual and lovely. One thing to note about Ash trees is that they can rot and fall very quickly if they die or are damaged, so if you add them to your yard, it’s a good idea to check on their health regularly.
Buckeye
As an Ohio tree service company, we have to mention the Buckeye! Buckeyes are among the first trees to change and lose their leaves in the fall, so adding one to your yard can allow you to extend the amount of time you get to enjoy beautiful fall foliage every autumn.
