Hurricanes In Cincinnati?

Here in Cincinnati, we don’t often experience hurricanes. But eleven years ago, in September of 2008, Hurricane Ike was a notable exception.

As WLWT noted, September 14 of 2008 was the day that 75 mph winds rocked the Cincinnati area. Millions of people lost power across Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio. Many of those people did not regain power for more than a week, as overstretched crews struggled to return the area to normalcy.

Intense winds stripped the roofs off of buildings. Trees landed on houses and cars. Many people lost their lives across the Tri-State region.

Around the world, Hurricane Ike took the lives of 195 people. Before coming so far inland, the storm hit Cuba and Texas. By the time it arrived in Cincinnati, it was only a Category 1 hurricane — any lower of a rating and it would not have been considered a hurricane at all — but it still did significant damage.

Looking back, though, we are proud of the way Cincinnati’s emergency services came to the rescue of our friends and neighbors. The community rallied, and fire and paramedic crews worked around the clock to help Cincinnatians survive the storm.
