It may not make sense for snow removal companies to show you how you can manage your own snow accumulations, but we are here to help. You can always call Tree Images to dig you out, but here are some self-maintenance tips as well.
With shoveling, there are two ways you can approach a heavy storm. You can go out after every couple of inches of snow drops – arguably easier, but perhaps more time-consuming – or you can wait until the snow ends, and then strip away the accumulated snow in layers.
Important to this task, though, is not trying to move too much snow at once. Strip off layers of snow rather than trying to budge giant drifts. Many injuries, particularly lower back and arm injuries, can result from trying to lift too much snow.
You can also approach your driveway in two rounds. You could use a pusher shovel to get the snow out to the edges of the driveway, and then return with a standard shovel (one with sides) to remove what remains after that. If your driveway is uneven, you need a shovel with a steel edge. An all-plastic shovel has difficulty with the uneven surfaces.
Either way, try not to walk on the snow if you intend to shovel it. Walking out – even just to get your mail – will pack the snow down, and make it much more difficult for you to shovel out of the way.
If you want to use a snow blower, and your driveway has room on either side (i.e. a place for snow to collect), the best technique is to start down the middle, and blow snow off to one side. Continue all the way down your driveway blowing snow from the middle off to that side you have designated, then flip around and come back, hitting the other side and the other direction.
As a general rule with a snow blower, you never want to blow snow onto pavement you have already cleared off. If you do that, it will stick to the fresh pavement and pack down, making it harder to remove than it was before.
Of course, you can always avoid this work and let us snow removal companies handle it for you. Our main line at Tree Images is 513-528-4167, and we have the tools and the muscle to get your driveway, sidewalks, and porch cleared off quickly.
