What is Oak Wilt?

Caused by the fungus Ceratocystis fagacearum, this disease disrupts the water-conducting vessels within the tree, leading to wilting, defoliation, and ultimately death. Cincinnati, with its rich diversity of oak species, is particularly susceptible to the impact of oak wilt. Oak wilt has been prevalent throughout the Cincinnati area for many years, but in the past few years it has begun to spread even more.
What Are the Symptoms of Oak Wilt?
Identifying oak wilt symptoms is crucial for early detection and intervention. The earlier you can identify the problem, the better your chances of saving your tree, and preventing oak wilt from spreading throughout your yard and your neighborhood.
Leaf Discoloration
Red oaks are known for their brilliant fall foliage. But a change in leaf color at other times during the year, or changing to an unexpected color during the fall, can be a major warning sign. If you notice that your oak trees are exhibiting a rapid discoloration, starting at the leaf margins and progressing inward, you should call in your local Cincinnati tree service company ASAP. Wilting and Drooping Leaves

How Do You Prevent and/or Manage Oak Wilt?
If you can take steps to prevent oak wilt affecting your trees, you’ll make your life easier and your trees’ lives longer. Luckily, there are some simple steps you can take to reduce the likelihood that your trees will get oak wilt. But if you suspect your trees are already infected, there are also things you can do to minimize the damage and the spread of this nasty affliction.
Avoid Pruning During Active Transmission Periods
Oak wilt is most easily transmitted during the spring and early summer months. Pruning during this time can expose healthy trees to the fungus through the open wounds that are inevitably created during pruning. Prune oaks during their dormant season, preferably between November and March, to reduce the risk of infection.
Root Graft Disruption
Oak trees that are growing too close to each other can form root grafts, enabling the transfer of the oak wilt fungus from an affected tree to a healthy one. Installing root barriers can help disrupt these connections and prevent the spread of the disease.
Prompt Removal of Infected Trees
If an oak tree is confirmed to be infected, and the damage is significant enough that it can’t be saved, it is crucial to promptly remove and properly dispose of the tree to prevent the spread of the disease to neighboring oaks.
Fungicide Treatment
In some cases, especially for high-value trees or those in close proximity to infected trees, fungicide treatments may be applied by certified arborists to try to save the tree while also protecting healthy oaks in the area.
