Summer is a time for enjoying the beautiful weather and basking in the sun after the cold winter. But it is also important to keep in mind that although your trees enjoy the change in weather, they are also vulnerable to problems that summer can cause. It is essential that trees receive the proper routine care so they can avoid disease, drought damage, and pest infestations. You want to take good care of your trees this summer, and we want to help you!
Mulching
Mulching trees in the summer is important because it not only eliminates weed growth but also helps to keep moisture in the soil. Another benefit of mulching is the stabilization of temperatures in the soil. It is essential that mulch be applied in a donut shape around the tree and is kept a couple of inches away from the base of the trunk of the tree. This will ensure that the mulch does not introduce diseases or create a favorable condition for an insect infestation. The best mulch for most situations is shredded hardwood. Mulching your trees may be the most important action you can take for your trees in the summer!
Watering
Most mature trees need water at the rate of about one inch each week. Newly planted or young trees will need more water. It is better to water deeply (not just getting the surface wet) to promote good root growth and to keep the roots well supplied with water. So, less frequent but deeper watering is ideal. Even in situations where your area is getting enough rain, you might find that your trees are still thirsty. Rain that falls suddenly (such as during summer storms) can sometimes run off before its absorbed, leaving your trees wet but without much benefit from the falling rain.
Fertilization
Trees need nutrients to support new growth and keep leaves healthy. A healthy tree will fend off insects and diseases without much intervention from people. We can sometimes improve the health of our trees by adding fertilizer that provides the right balance of nutrients for optimal health. The type and amount of fertilization will depend on whether you live in the city or in a rural area, as well as the species and age of the tree. Cities tend to be high-stress areas for trees and these trees often need more fertilization.
Pruning
Pruning dead, diseased or damaged branches is appropriate in the summer if needed to protect the health and safety of the tree, such as instances of limbs broken during thunderstorms or pest infestations. Otherwise, pruning is best done when the tree is dormant, in the late fall, winter, or very early spring.
Pests
Trees should be inspected throughout the summer for the presence of insect infestations. Problems with the health of trees can be avoided when pests are identified and removed early. Some insects can cause a tree to be damaged to the point that it becomes a hazard, dies, and/or must be removed. Catching these problems early will prevent many problems and potentially great expense later.
Secure Trees
Make sure that your trees are protected against damage from storms. While you cannot always prevent limbs from being damaged and falling to the ground due to strong winds, you may be able to prevent the tree from being uprooted or moved out of position. Summer is the prime time for severe storms with high winds. Some trees require bracing or cabling in order to support their structure in extreme conditions. Limbs that are particularly vulnerable to storm damage may need to be removed before they have the opportunity to break. Your local tree care experts are the best people to consult if you’re uncertain which preventative measure to take to protect your trees during strong summer storms.
